Parental leave is an entitlement for both mothers and fathers. Including adoptive parents.
You must have worked for your employer for 12 month continuously.
Entitlement up to 13 weeks for each child up to the age of 5, or 5th anniversary of placement for adopted children or their 18th birthday, whatever comes first.
If the child is disabled then the entitlement is up to 18 weeks.
Entitlement must be taken in blocks of one week with a maximum of 4 weeks per year. If child is disabled then periods of less than a week can be taken.
All parental leave is unpaid unless agreed with the employer.
You have the right not to suffer detriment, be discriminated against or dismissed for requesting adoption leave.
If you return to work after 4 weeks or less you have a right to go back to the same work. If this is not available then it should be similar and of the same status.
