International Day of Charity: providing additional support during money stress
September 2026 PayPlan Blog #1

On 5th September, the International Day of Charity recognises the important role charities play in supporting people and building communities. While charities are often associated with food banks or fundraising, many also provide practical help to people facing a difficult time with money, from housing and employment support to mental health services and specialist advice.
Money worries can affect anyone, and they often don’t happen on their own. A job loss, ill health, caring for a loved one or the breakdown of a relationship can all have an impact on your finances. When several challenges happen at once, it can feel difficult to know where to turn.
That’s why getting the right support is about more than managing debt. Sometimes, having someone to help with the wider issues you’re facing can make all the difference.
How charities can support you
Many charities across the UK provide free, independent support that can help you navigate some of life’s most challenging situations.
Depending on your situation, charities may be able to help with:
- Mental health and emotional wellbeing support
- Food and essential household items
- Housing and homelessness advice
- Domestic abuse support
- Bereavement services
- Employment and skills guidance
- Disability and long-term health support
- Help for carers, veterans, young people and older adults
- Benefits guidance
When to reach out for debt advice
Taking the first step to get debt advice can feel daunting, but you don’t have to deal with everything on your own, we’re here to support you with free, confidential debt advice, but it’s not always the only support that you may need.
We recognise that everyone’s different. That’s why we’ve built a Wider Support Network of more than 120 trusted partner organisations, many of which are specialised charities that help with different things you could be working through.
Whether you’re struggling with your mental health, housing, bereavement, family issues or something else, our advisers can help connect you with organisations that are best placed to support you. We can make referrals where appropriate or signpost you to trusted services, helping you access the wider support you may need.
By working closely with charities and specialist organisations, we aim to offer more joined-up support, so you can get practical help for every part of your situation, not just your finances.
