Man, 22, dies after fall from fish farming support vessel

As a union we are devastated to hear about the death of a young man whilst at work in the fish farming industry.

Sarah Woolley, General Secretary of the Bakers Food and Allied Workers Union, commented on the tragic death of a salmon worker who fell from a salmon farming workboat:

‘As a trade union representing workers across the salmon industry in Scotland we want to pass on our condolences to the family of the worker who tragically died on Friday. No worker should leave for work and never return to their loved ones. Our hearts go out to this young worker and all those who loved him.

We need to learn more before commenting on the specifics of this tragic death. But what we will say is how for well over a year we have been raising concerns about the general state of health and safety in the salmon industry and our belief that this industry plays fast and loose with its workforce’s health and safety.

The death of this young man confirms we were right to raise these concerns. Make no mistake this tragic death hardens our resolve to campaign for improvements in the salmon industry.’
