International Self-Care Day highlights the importance of making self-care a regular part of everyday life. Celebrated on 24 July (24/7), it serves as a reminder that looking after our health and wellbeing is something we should prioritise 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Whether you have five minutes or an entire afternoon, taking time for yourself can help you relax, recharge, and improve your overall wellbeing.

What free self-care activities can I try?

  • Take a moment to meditate

Meditation can help reduce stress and anxiety by lowering your heart rate and calming the nervous system. To get started, find a quiet, comfortable space, close your eyes, and focus on your breathing. Take slow, deep breaths and gently bring your attention back to your breath whenever your mind begins to wander. Even just five to ten minutes of meditation each day can make a positive difference.

  • Put your thoughts on paper

Writing down your thoughts and feelings can help you process emotions, gain clarity, and reflect on your experiences. Journaling provides a safe and private space to express yourself, helping you better understand your perspective and identify what may be affecting your mood.

  • Breathe your way to calm

Breathing exercises are a simple but powerful way to regulate your nervous system. Different techniques work for different people, so it can be helpful to explore a range of exercises to find what feels most effective and comfortable for you.

  • Connect with nature

Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature can have a calming effect on both mind and body. Research has shown that being in nature can help reduce cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress, while increasing feelings of relaxation.

  • Get moving with a walk

A short walk can do wonders for your physical and mental health. Walking releases endorphins, helps reduce stress hormones, boosts your mood, and can provide an opportunity to clear your mind and reset during a busy day.

  • Give back through volunteering

Helping others can also be an act of self-care. Volunteering increases social connections and provides a sense of purpose. It can be particularly beneficial for those experiencing loneliness or isolation.

If you need further support

Debt can take a toll on both your finances and your mental wellbeing, but you don’t have to face it alone. While self-care can help you manage stress and improve your resilience, you don’t have to face financial difficulties alone.
