“Our Members Won’t Pay the Price for This Merger”

The Bakers, Food and Allied Workers’ Union (BFAWU) has responded to yesterday’s announcement of the proposed acquisition involving Allied and Hovis, calling for urgent clarity, reassurance, and full engagement with the workforce.

The union has made clear that its priority is to protect the jobs, pay, terms, and conditions of its members throughout the process.

BFAWU General Secretary Sarah Woolley said:

“Our members will not bear the brunt of this merger. We expect both companies to be open, proactive, and committed to protecting jobs, pay, and conditions — and we will hold them to that.”

BFAWU National President Ian Hodson added:

“Our members are the beating heart of these businesses. Any future plans must start from a commitment to job security and better working conditions — not cost-cutting at the expense of the workforce.”

The BFAWU recognises that the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will now undertake its assessment of the acquisition. However, the union has warned that uncertainty about the future structure of the businesses is already creating serious concerns among workers about job safety and security.

The union is urging the companies involved to set out clear plans for the future and to provide timely reassurance to employees.

The BFAWU will stand firmly with its members every step of the way.
