Reflect, Celebrate, Mobilise: Building Hope for the Future

As we come to the end of the second month of the Year of Climate Action, it’s a good moment to pause, to reflect on what we’ve already achieved, celebrate the worker-led action taking place across our union, and look ahead to the work still to come.

The Year of Climate Action is about more than awareness it’s about building a movement. And already, BFAWU members are showing that when workers organise, real climate action follows. Across our food factories, bakeries, and distribution centres, our members are challenging waste, improving health and safety, and demanding fair, sustainable practices that benefit both people and the planet.

Celebrating Worker-Led Climate Action

Real climate leadership doesn’t come from CEOs or politicians it comes from workers who see what needs to change and take action together. Our reps and members have been putting environmental issues on the bargaining table, sharing practical ideas to cut waste and energy use, and linking the fight for climate justice with the fight for decent jobs and conditions.

These are the stories that too often go unheard but they’re at the heart of a just transition. Every small change won through collective action adds up to something powerful: a vision of workplaces that are safe, fair, and sustainable.

Reflecting on What We’ve Learned So Far

In just two months, one clear lesson has emerged: workers are ready to lead. We know that tackling the climate crisis isn’t separate from tackling inequality it’s part of the same fight. When employers cut corners, drive down pay, or ignore safety, it harms both workers and the environment. When unions push back, we protect both.

We’ve also learned that solidarity is our greatest tool. Whether its supporting communities hit by flooding, or pushing for greener production methods, our collective strength gives us the power to turn good ideas into action.

Mobilising for the Year Ahead

This year is about building momentum and that means turning reflection into mobilisation. In the months ahead, BFAWU will continue to highlight the power of worker-led climate action, demand corporate accountability, and work with other unions and allies to fight for a just transition that delivers for working people.

We’ll keep organising in our workplaces, building confidence and skills so that every member knows they have a role to play. Because climate justice isn’t a specialist issue it’s a trade union issue, rooted in fairness, safety, and dignity at work.

Building Hope Together

Hope isn’t something we wait for it’s something we create. Every conversation, every campaign, every collective action builds the hope we need to face the challenges ahead.

So, as we move from reflection into mobilisation, let’s celebrate how far we’ve already come and commit to going further. Together, we can build a future that’s fair, sustainable, and worker led.

Because when workers lead, hope becomes action and action becomes change.
